What the parts are called in United Kingdom

A UK IBAN has 22 characters: GB, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code, the 6-digit sort code and the 8-digit account number.

The bank code is the first four letters of the bank’s BIC (NWBK, BARC, LOYD, HBUK…). It is not part of the sort code, so you need it from a statement or the bank. We check the format of a sort code but do not look up bank names: there is no free, complete public list.

The check digits of GB29 NWBK 6016 1331 9268 19

  1. Move the first four characters to the end: NWBK60161331926819GB29
  2. Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 2332112060161331926819161129
  3. Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
  4. To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 69, and 98 − 69 = 29.
