What the parts are called in Poland

A Polish IBAN has 28 characters and is simply PL in front of the 26-digit NRB account number. The first two NRB digits are already the IBAN check digits.

Digits 3–10 of the NRB are the bank’s sort number (numer rozliczeniowy); its 8th digit is a check digit. The calculator tests both checks.

The check digits of PL61 1090 1014 0000 0712 1981 2874

  1. Move the first four characters to the end: 109010140000071219812874PL61
  2. Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 109010140000071219812874252161
  3. Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
  4. To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 37, and 98 − 37 = 61.

The national check inside the account number

The 8th digit of the bank code is a check digit over the first seven, with weights 3, 9, 7, 1, 3, 9, 7. For the example it is 4.
