What the parts are called in Spain

A Spanish IBAN has 24 characters: ES, two check digits and the 20-digit CCC (Código Cuenta Cliente): entidad (4, the bank), oficina (4, the branch), DC (2 control digits) and cuenta (10).

The two DC digits check the bank/branch and the account number separately. If you only know entidad, oficina and cuenta, the calculator works out the DC.

The check digits of ES91 2100 0418 4502 0005 1332

  1. Move the first four characters to the end: 21000418450200051332ES91
  2. Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 21000418450200051332142891
  3. Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
  4. To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 7, and 98 − 7 = 91.

The national check inside the account number

The DC are two mod-11 digits. The first covers entidad and oficina (preceded by 00), the second the 10-digit account number, with weights 1, 2, 4, 8, 5, 10, 9, 7, 3, 6. For the example they are 45.
