What the parts are called in Netherlands

A Dutch IBAN has 18 characters: NL, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code (such as ABNA, INGB, RABO) and a 10-digit rekeningnummer.

The bank code is the start of the bank’s BIC. Most Dutch account numbers pass the “11-test”; former Postbank numbers (now ING) do not, so we show a failed 11-test as a hint only.

The check digits of NL91 ABNA 0417 1643 00

  1. Move the first four characters to the end: ABNA0417164300NL91
  2. Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 101123100417164300232191
  3. Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
  4. To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 7, and 98 − 7 = 91.

The national check inside the account number

Most Dutch account numbers pass the 11-test: the digits multiplied by 10, 9, 8 … 1 add up to a multiple of 11. Old Postbank numbers (now ING) do not, so a failed test is only a hint.
