What the parts are called in Belgium

A Belgian IBAN is one of the shortest: 16 characters. It is BE, two check digits and the old 12-digit account number (written 123-4567890-12): a 3-digit bank code, 7 digits and 2 check digits.

The last two digits are the remainder of the first ten divided by 97. The calculator rejects an account number whose check digits do not match.

The check digits of BE68 5390 0754 7034

  1. Move the first four characters to the end: 539007547034BE68
  2. Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 539007547034111468
  3. Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
  4. To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 30, and 98 − 30 = 68.
