What the parts are called in Italy
An Italian IBAN has 27 characters. After IT and the check digits comes the CIN, one letter that checks the rest; then ABI (5 digits, the bank), CAB (5 digits, the branch) and the 12-character numero di conto.
Because of the CIN, an Italian IBAN has two independent checks. A typing error that slips through one is caught by the other. Our calculator fills in the CIN for you.
The check digits of IT60 X054 2811 1010 0000 0123 456
- Move the first four characters to the end: X0542811101000000123456IT60
- Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 330542811101000000123456182960
- Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
- To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 38, and 98 − 38 = 60.
The national check inside the account number
The CIN is a letter calculated from ABI, CAB and the 12-character account number: characters in odd positions are converted with one table, those in even positions with another, the values are added and the remainder of the sum divided by 26 picks the letter (0 = A). For the example the CIN is X.
