About IbanWise

What IbanWise is

IbanWise is a free set of tools to check IBANs and to calculate them from national bank details, in seven languages. It is a private project, not a bank, and not connected to any bank, to SWIFT or to the Bundesbank.

Where the data comes from

• IBAN formats, lengths and examples: the SWIFT ISO 13616 IBAN Registry, file dated September 17, 2026.
• German bank codes and BICs: the Deutsche Bundesbank bank code file valid September 7, 2026 – December 6, 2026. Source: Deutsche Bundesbank.
• Rules quoted in the texts: Regulation (EU) 260/2012, Regulation (EU) 2024/886 and Directive (EU) 2015/2366, read on EUR-Lex.

How we test

Every country’s official example must pass. Then we change every character of every example and swap every pair of characters, and check that the change is caught: tens of thousands of wrong IBANs per test run. The national checks (Italy, Spain, France and others) are tested against the official examples.
